Events

Four events are held each year at the Toronto Botanical Garden, 777 Lawrence Ave. E., Toronto, ON. Members and the public are invited to these events. The dates for 2026 are: February 22, May 3, August 16 and November 15

General meetings are held in February and November. The agenda for these meetings include a presentation and/or workshop, a mini show where members bring their entries to predetermined categories for judging, a plant sale and refreshments – a time to socialize.

In early May, we have our Annual Plant Sale, held in conjunction with the Ontario Rock Garden & Hardy Plant Society, and other plant vendors. It is our main fundraiser for the year and a good time to obtain unusual varieties for your home and garden and for the Annual Show in August.

In August, we hold our Annual Show which showcases the numerous varieties of Geraniums, Pelargoniums and Fuchsias – in containers; as cut flowers; in a Floral Design; and as a food, fragrance, or decorative item. New hybrids may be introduced for the first time to the public. The exhibits are judged based on the quality of the plants, blooms and foliage.
There is also a small section on Begonias.

Glen’s introduction

For the very first time, our meeting was both in person and by Zoom – at least for the presentation portion of the meeting. Our presenter was Mr. Rodger Tschanz, who created and manages the University of Guelph’s Ornamental Trial Garden program. The program has expanded to include locations in Guelph, Milton, the Royal Botanical Gardens, and at the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre.

Rodger spoke to us about Geraniums in the University of Guelph’s Trial Gardens as well as new varieties of other ornamental plants and vegetables. The last time he spoke to us was during our February 2020 General meeting when he brought with him a huge pot of a pelargonium that was on trial the year before, yet unnamed. We were in awe at its numerous heads of double rose coloured blooms. We now know it as ‘Rosalinda’ – a very popular item at our annual plant sale in May 2024. This year, he brought with him cuttings of ‘Ontario 200 Geranium’ which was introduced in 1984 and planted in Queen’s Park. Incidentally, 1984 is the year the Geranium & Pelargonium Society was conceived. The cuttings of Ontario 200 were available for free to anyone in attendance.

The plants in the trial gardens are grown from seed to avoid soil-borne diseases.
